Hopscotch and Food Cart Field Trip

On April 10th, we took students from our Community Art class to Portland for an exciting new adventure.  The Community Art class is made up of students that have taken both my Healthy Lifestyles Class (which focuses on healthy cooking and activities you can do in your backyard or neighborhood) and Mrs.Hummel’s Art Class.  We wanted to give them an experience that highlighted both of our classes’ concepts in the real world.  Students started their experience at Hopscotch which is an interactive art museum.  They got to see large murals, make musical art, electrify their movements, multiply themselves, be mesmerized by lights and see environmental and social impacts turned to artistic statements ….oh yeah, and there was a rainbow ball pit (need I say more).  This part of the field trip was able to mesh activity and art into one experience.  Afterwards, we walked 4 blocks to arrive at the Hawthorne Asylum Food Cart Pod.  Students were tasked the day before with researching the 18 food carts to find a cultural food that they would like to try.  The rules were that it had to be healthy, in their budget and from a different culture.  Once we arrived, students quickly found the food cart they had chosen and ordered their lunches, and of course everyone also stopped by the boba tea cart for a beverage.  Students enjoyed food from countries such as Japan, Korea, Denmark, Mexico, Russia, and Thailand.  Everyone was excited about their choices and enjoyed trying new foods.  Students excitedly talked about their day the whole bus ride home!
